Piscola Mami, Antonia Lara Sanchez
My business is built around creating hands-on, creative experiences and providing a healing space for others. I truly believe that art can bring us closer to our communities and ourselves. Piscola Mami offers a variety of craft classes, specializing in fiber arts, ceramics, and other DIY projects. My workshops cater to individuals, groups, and even corporate clients, allowing people to unwind, connect and tap into their creativity.
Piscola Mami offers in-person and virtual workshops, making it easier for participants to learn from wherever they are. In addition to the classes, I provide high-quality DIY kits for macramé and other crafts, complete with all the materials needed and written and visual instructions to cater to various learning styles.
I started my business during a very difficult time in my life. I was going through major life transitions. At the time, I was struggling deeply with my mental health. I found calmness through the arts. Crafting and learning more about ceramics became a lifeline for me. Hosting workshops in local plant stores gave me a sense of peace and community during a period when I desperately needed it.
Realizing the healing power of creativity, I knew I wanted to share this experience with others. I started teaching workshops to help people connect not just with art but also with each other. I believe creativity can be a transformative and healing force, and I wanted to build a business that brings that to life—helping others find joy, calm, and connection through crafting, just as I did.
My business is about more than just teaching a skill. It’s about creating a space where people can find comfort, express themselves, and heal, whether they’re going through something difficult or just looking for a creative outlet.
My business is catered towards all ages. I have taught crafts to people as young as 4 years old up to 80 years old and I believe that is rare and also special. Creativity is our birth right and we need third spaces to cultivate it in community.
I want people to know that my business isn’t just about teaching crafts—it's about fostering connection, both with creativity and with the community. My workshops create a space where people can come together, whether they are part of a corporate team or a local community, to share an experience. It's a business rooted in passion, teaching, and supporting others, both in skill-building and in amplifying small businesses around me.
I believe that art and entrepreneurship go hand in hand. Very early on, I realized that I could only get so far with my own skill set, as the business aspect of what I was doing was uncharted territory and overwhelming. Starting a business was a new challenge for me, and I wanted to make sure I set myself up for success in a sustainable way.
I sought help from SCORE because I knew their mentors had the expertise that could help me grow. I had heard other entrepreneurs express their positive experience with SCORE and was drawn to their mission of supporting small business owners. I wanted to make sure I was not just creating something for the short term, but building a business that could thrive long into the future.
Steve has been such an amazing mentor! He frequently checks in and always provides me with resources after our meetings.
